Around the World Dinner lands in France

M. has been asking for a French dinner for a couple of weeks now. I had been holding him off since I was having trouble thinking of a vegetarian French main course. Then I found The Veggie Table's French cuisine section (http://www.theveggietable.com/recipes/frenchrecipes.html). What a great find! All of the menu items in bold came from their site.

The Menu (Le Menu)
Appetizers: crudites & aioli, cheeses (chevre and Brie) and a baguette from our local bakery

Main Course: ratatouille over rice

Dessert: strawberry sorbet (made from strawberries we picked last week!)

All was delicious, but we had what my Dad would call a near failure with the sorbet. I followed the option for "without an ice cream maker" and froze the sorbet in ice cube trays, which I had to buy for this purpose since we have a built-in ice maker. The ice trays were more flexible than any I had seen and we weren't sure we'd be able to pop them out of the trays! A little hot water on the bottoms of the trays eventually did the trick and the sorbet tasted fine. It was messy enough that I'm not sure we'll do that again... without buying different ice cube trays.

In addition to the flag, I found a coloring page on Crayola's website that had pictures of crayons, with the colors given in English, French, and Spanish. M. had fun coloring in the crayons and learning the colors in French.

With help from Rhapsody, I put together a music playlist of French songs, including several renditions of La Marseillaise and a couple of pop artists. Marie Laforet was a singer in the 60s and 70s who recorded (among many things) French language versions of "Paint it Black" and "Sounds of Silence." We listened to these and the French and English versions of "Tous Les Visages Du Amour" (which is simply "She" in English).

M. is in bed, tired from a long playdate today and will add his thoughts tomorrow.
